Insider know-how for your stay
Little things that make a big difference at 9,000 ft. From altitude to powder days to parking, here's what locals wish every guest knew.
Hydrate, then hydrate more
Silverthorne sits at 9,000 ft. Drink twice as much water as you think you need, especially the first 48 hours. Coffee and alcohol hit harder — pace yourself.
Sunscreen, even in winter
The sun is intense at altitude. Snow reflects it back. Bring SPF 30+ and reapply on the chair — your face will thank you.
Powder days = leave early
On a fresh snow morning, leave for the resort 45–60 min earlier than you think. I-70 backs up fast. Or stay local — Sapphire Point and the Rec Path are gorgeous in fresh snow.
AWD or 4WD in winter
Colorado enforces a traction law on I-70 in winter. A rental car without all-wheel-drive will get turned around at the chain station. If you booked 2WD, swap it.
Don't run a generator inside
Sounds obvious — but every winter someone tries to run a portable heater or generator inside a closed garage. The home has plenty of heat; please don't bring outside ones in.
Wildlife is real
Moose, bears, and foxes are common in town. Don't leave food on the deck. Keep dogs leashed on trails — moose have right of way.
Download offline maps
Cell service drops in the canyons. Download Google Maps offline for Summit County before you head out for the day.
Free bus in winter
The Summit Stage runs free buses to every ski resort from Silverthorne. Park your car, skip the resort parking fees and traffic. Schedule on the Summit Stage app.
Best afternoons
Locals know: mountain weather rolls in by 2pm in summer (afternoon thunderstorms) and 3pm in winter (clouds + lifts get cold). Start early, finish by mid-afternoon.
